One Day Poolburn Gorge Spectacular - Min 2 people

Why not let Altitude Bikes take you to the spectacular Poolburn Gorge section of the Otago Central Rail Trail. This one day ride takes in the Poolburn Viaduct 37 m high,two tunnels which are cut through schist rock bluffs and the longest bridge on the Rail trail over the Manuherikia river.

This ride is 47km in distance and descends from Auripo rd down the stunning valleys of Central Otago past townships of Lauder,Omakau,Ophir and Chatto Creek finishing back in Alexandra a distance of 47 km

Spectacular Otago Central Rail Trail  Tour – 2 Day - Min 2 people

Meet at Altitude Bikes in Alexandra and we will  transport you out to Ranfurly where you will start your ride.  You will pass through Wedderburn then onto Oturehua, visiting the Historic Gilchrists Store and Hayes Engineering Works.  Continue riding to the spectacular Poolburn Gorge section of the Otago Central Rail Trail taking in the Poolburn Viaduct, 37m high, two tunnels which are cut through schist rock bluffs and the longest bridge on the rail trail over the Manuherikia River then passing through the stunning valleys of Central Otago to Lauder for you overnight B&B accommodation. 40 Km
After a good breakfast its back on the bike and you head for Omakau, or you can take a detour through Ophir and visit New Zealands oldest working Post Office.  Once back on the trail you ride to Chatto Creek for some lunch before completing your ride, arriving back into Alexandra, 36 km.  If time permits and you are still feeling fit you can ride up to Clyde on the Rail Trail and back to Alexandra on the river trail, 25km extra.

Otago Central Rail Trail 4 Day Package

Our 4-day self guided Rail Trail Package includes:

AltitudeBikes Shuttle will pick you up from your Queenstown accommodation  and transport you to Alexandra/Clyde where you will collect bikes (thesauri fitted to size so will require your heights beforehand ) and will start you on the Rail Trail.

Day 1-Ride from Clyde/Alexandra to Omakau, a ride of 35km. This part of the Rail Trail runs through typical Central Otago schist rock and wild thyme landscape, finishing at the historic town of Ophir, B&B accommodation Oamkau/Ophir.

Day 2-Ride from Ophir to Wedderburn a ride of 43km, is perhaps the most spectacular section of the Rail Trail, Firstly you cross the Manuherikia river on the trail’s longest bridge (110 meters) before encountering 2 tunnels which are cut through the schist bluffs of the Poolburn Gorge and cross the Ida valley to Oturehua, where you can visit the authentic 1930′s style Gilchrist’s store (still operating as a general store) and the historic Hayes Engineering Workshops. Oturehua is renowned for its hot summers and cols winters, and frequently records both New Zealands highest and lowest temperatures.Passing the Ida Dam, popular for its winter curling bonspiels, you will gradually climb to the highest point of the Trail Wedderburn. Day 3-Ride from Wedderburn to Hyde, a ride of 46km. The ride starts through the Maniototo Vally into Ranfurly, the main service town of the District and then starts descending through to Waipiata, crossing the Taieri River and passes the site of the former Taieri lake. After arriving in the upper Taieri Gorge, the trail then closely follows the River until you reach Hyde where you will stay overnight in B&B accommodation, Hyde  or Waipiata.

Day 4 – Ride from Hyde to Middlemarch, a ride of 27km.  Beyond Hyde the narrow confines of the upper Taieri Gorge and the river opens up to the wide space of the Strath Taieri Plains until you reach Middlemarch.  Here you will either drop off your bikes and take the Taieri Gorge Railway train on to Dunedin or, alternatively, we will transport you back to Alexandra/Clyde or Queenstown.

The cost of this package is NZ$725.00 per person and includes:

  • 4 days bike hire, panniers, helmet, tools and spares, and bike return fee
  • 3 nights Bed & Breakfast accommodation en suite rooms (continental breakfast)
  • Altitude shuttle from Queenstown hotel to Alexandra/Clyde
  • Return shuttle with Altitude to Alexandra/Clyde or Queenstown hotel OR Taieri Gorge Railway train ticket to Dunedin

We will transfer 1 bag (max 15kg) per person per drop and additional luggage transfers can be arranged at $10.00 per bag (max. 15kg) per drop.

This package does not include lunches or evening meals, however these can be organised by prior arrangement or purchased by you from various establishments along the Trail.

Our trips are self guided but rest assured we are only a phone call away and our support vehicles are on hand should the need arise.

Accommodation is based on share twin/double ensuite rooms. Overnight stops may vary slightly due to accommodation availability and we will use our discretion in this instance.

Otago Rail Trail/Roxburgh-Clutha Trails Combo 3 or 4 days - Min 2 people

We have picked the best of the best Central Otago cycle trails for you to ride providing the most memorable cycle experience possible. If we only had 3 or 4 days to cycle in Central this would be our pick.
Day 1
Meet at Altitude Bikes in Alexandra  and we transport you out to the Spectacular Poolburn Gorge section of the Otago Central Rail Trail. This ride is 47km in distance and descends from Auripo Road through the stunning valleys of Central Otago townships of Lauder, Omakua, Ophir and Chatto Creek finishing back in Alexandra for your first nights accommodation. If time permits and you are still feeling fit you can ride up to Clyde on the Rail Trail and back to Alexandra on the river trail, 25km extra.
Day 2
From Alexandra you will ride over the Clutha River bridge onto the Roxburgh Gorge trail and cycle 10 km to Doctors Point Jetty. Transfer onto the Jet boat with your bikes and hear about the early Gold Rush history of the Roxburgh Gorge while aboard and see many of the old miners rock dwellings still in the gorge, after 12 km you will be dropped off at Shingle Creek.  You then ride the next 12km climbing through tree lined switchbacks to the Roxburgh Dam, crossing the dam and joining the Mighty Clutha River ( New Zealand largest river by volume) ride 9 km on to Roxburgh township and overnight B&B accommodation.
Day 3
From Roxburgh township you will follow the willow lined Clutha Gold trail for 20 km, down stream, passing whitewater rapids and bluffs through to Miller Flat and then into the spectacular Beaumont Gorge, pass the swing bridge and onto Beaumont, 40 km in total.  Here you will have return transport to Alexandra (end of 3 day trip) or overnight  B&B accommodation.
Day 4.
Ride from Beaumont accommodation towards Lawrence passing through Tunnel Hill and finishing in the historic town of Lawrence. You may have time to visit Gabriel’s Gully  the sight of the first gold rush in New Zealand before our van collects you in the early afternoon and transfers you back to Alexandra and the finish of your tour.

Otago Central Rail Trail 3 Day Tour Option

For the fitter rider we also offer a 3 day self-guided tour, the package includes:

Altitude Bikes shuttle will pick up from your Queenstown accommodation or Queenstown Airport and transport you to Alexandra/Clyde.

Day 1 – Ride from Clyde to Lauder, 44km, and overnight B&B accommodation in Lauder.

Day 2 – Ride from Lauder to Waipiata, 55km, and overnight B&B accommodation in Waipiata.

Day 3 – Ride from Waipiata to Middlemarch, 52.5km. Then train to Dunedin or return transport to Alexandra/Clyde or Queenstown.

The cost of this package is NZ$595.00 per person and includes:

The Rail Trail is open all year round, the weather in this region is characterized by clear, sunny days, ideal for mountain biking.  In the winter, however, this can mean cold nights, frosty mornings and sometimes low-hanging fog.  Temperatures in Central Otago can range from 40°C in summer to 0°C in winter.

The Taieri Gorge Railway train operates from Middlemarch to Dunedin from October to April departing Middlemarch on Fridays and Sundays at 1:00pm and arriving into Dunedin at 3:25pm or from Pukerangi to Dunedin each day, departing 11:45am, arriving into Dunedin at 1:30pm or departing 4:45pm and arriving into Dunedin at 6:30pm. For the Pukerangi service you will need to catch the shuttle connection from Middlemarch.
